Joyride Cycling Tips for Women: Enjoy the Ride!
To get you prepared for this summer’s Joyride, a women’s event from Cycle Oregon, we’re providing a series of cycling tips for a more comfortable ride.
Joyride is coming up on June 11 so e thought we’d devote this last post to tips for how to have the best ride possible.
1) Getting There.
Think through these details and come up with a plan:
- How are you going to get there (can you carpool?)
- Is your car all set up to carry your bike?
- Exactly WHERE are you headed and what’s the driving route? Plan that out.
- What time do you need to be there? Plan for a full day – you’ll probably get home in the early evening.
2) Who’s Going?
Have you invited all of your friends? Bike rides are way more fun when all your riding buddies are along for the day, so send out a last minute message to everyone, you never know who might be free to join you.
If you’re going to the ride alone, don’t worry! You’ll be in great company. Cycle Oregon’s rides attract a very friendly crowd of people eager to meet each other. Most people sign up for supported rides like this for the sense of camaraderie so get ready to meet some awesome ladies!
3) What Are You Wearing?
We don’t mean this in a vain way, just in a prep way. Is your chamois clean and ready? Do your laundry early in the week, then set that apparel aside and don’t wear it until the ride so it’s ready to go.
Consider what you might want to wear for the drive there (mornings are chilly) and after. It can feel really nice to change into some comfy clothes after a long bike ride. Don’t forget undies and street shoes!
4) Plan Your Nutrition
Cycle Oregon does an excellent job of taking care of their riders, but you might find you need additional snacks to meet your specific dietary needs. Think this through in advance and pack a few things that fit easily in a small handlebar bag (a feed bag) or your jersey pockets.
5) Embrace the Day Before!
We love the day before the ride! There’s so much you can do to set the tone for the ride. Here are some of our favorites:
- If you have a garage and have the space, load your bike so it’s ready to go.
- Set out your clothes.
- Eat REALLY well. Don’t be afraid to eat a lot, but keep it healthy.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Pack your day bag and gear, such as water bottles and gloves.
- Stretch a little to stay loose.
- Coordinate last minute details with your biking posse.
- Confirm you know where you’re going.
- Get some cash – it’s just handy to have cash at events and when you’re in small towns using cash helps support small businesses.
- And finally, get a good night’s sleep. Rest up and dream of riding your bike!
